Be 1% Better

To date, 1% for the Planet has donated over $225 million to non-profit environmental organisations. 1% doesn't sound like much, but the combined effect of all these principled businesses pledging that seemingly small amount, is huge.

The current government's voting record on fracking, which effectively approves industrialisation of the countryside for a fossil fuel solution that has next to no chance of meeting the demand, is terrifying. Friends of the Earth explain better than I ever could why renewable energy investment makes so much more sense. Climate change is real, it was real when I wrote a dissertation on it 14 (fourteen) years ago whilst studying at Sheffield University, powered by £1.50 pints.

Why it is important to us

When we formed Outdoor Provisions we had three clear signposts to guide our decision making. Our third signpost, Enable and Protect is the reason behind becoming a 1% for the Planet member. It's a no brainer for us at this stage as it's not reliant on profit-making, but turnover. So we donate money from sales even if we are not making a profit. We can also contribute to this figure by volunteering and pushing the 1% for the Planet cause - watch this space.

As a company run by, and designed for, fresh-air-heads we're intrinsically linked to the outdoors. We couldn't live with simply taking from it without giving something back, as many businesses that exist in this are ado - we need now, more than ever, to be custodians of the outdoors and advocates for the environment.

The exciting part for us comes next. We're in the process of firming up our partnerships with organisations that enable and protect things close to our heart and our home. We can't say anymore for now!

"The intent of 1% for the Planet is to help fund these diverse environmental organizations so that collectively they can be a more powerful source in solving the world’s problems."
— Yvon Chouinard in his book, 'Let my People go Surfing'.

What can you do?

You don’t have to be a business to contribute to 1% for the Planet, you can do it at an individual level, find out more here.

If you're a business and want to know more about joining, send me an email, and we can put you in touch with the right people.

If you can't donate, then we encourage you to support businesses that are signed up to 1% for the Planet, you can find them here, or volunteer with an environmental non-profit. We're planning some volunteering options later this year and will be calling on you fresh-air-heads for help. Volunteering can be demanding work, but we know some guys that sell energy bars...

See you outside,
